The purpose of the position is to perform as a Painter applying coating materials on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces.
The major duties and responsivities include: Redecorating offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters, and shop buildings; Painting and refinishing furniture, wood and metal, such as desks, cabinets, chairs, operating room and laundry equipment; Glazing and caulking windows on air conditioning equipment, cutting and installing glass; Installing vinyl wall coverings, hanging paper. etc.; Cutting stencil, painting signs and blending and mixing colors; Preparing coating material by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing various additives; Applying special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining; and Performing other related duties as assigned.
Skill and Knowledge
Knowledge of any of the accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Skill in matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and in combining agents with coating materials.
Knowledge of how to build up, shape and level surfaces, with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone, even out dents and scars, by burning-in processes and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents.
Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use and application of various kinds of materials.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment such as brushes. rollers. spray guns. trowels. screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices, and wet and other thickness gauges.
The contractor personnel determine the methods, techniques, materials, and devices best suited to obtain smooth-textured and decorative surfaces and ensuring that surface coatings meet level and thickness requirements. The VA COR will check overall work to see that it meets trade standards.
The contractor personnel prepare and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This position requires the contractor personnel to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The contractor personnel lifts, carries and sets up equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, the contractor personnel may handle materials that weigh 40 pounds or over.
