This position is part of the J&J Powder Division under SJS Executives and provides technical powder coating application and equipment support for our powder coating operations.  This includes weighing in on both design and production related topics and requires effective cross functional collaboration with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, service, suppliers, and management. The successful candidate will demonstrate teamwork, excellent communication skills, and commitment to excellence, learning, and growth


The Powder Coating Technician is responsible for performing necessary prep work on various parts, applying powder paint to products ensuring required film thickness, color, and cosmetic requirements are met, and adjusting equipment as needed to produce high quality parts.


  • Takes direction from Lead Person or Supervisor in a cooperative manner.
  • Lifts and hangs parts on overhead conveyor and removes them. Understands proper methods for hanging parts for optimal coating. Uses appropriate and safe lifting techniques in loading and removing parts.
  • Unloads parts from conveyor and places in appropriate storage container or area to prevent damage. Properly identifies and labels parts that have been removed from the conveyor after coating.
  • Operates electrostatic powder spray guns and related equipment and is able to adjust settings for optimal performance. Applies uniform coatings at proper mil thicknesses with no sags or light spots.
  • Tests finishes with approved test methods.
  • Determines if a product needs to be rejected and understands how to initiate corrective action.
  • Meets department standards for efficiency, productivity, and quality. Brings any issues or concerns regarding powder coating to supervisor's attention.
  • Operates the wash system and the cure/dry oven and knows how to adjust keep in safe/appropriate operating range.
  • Aids in the maintenance and cleaning of the powder coating department. Operates the powder reclaim booth.
  • May be utilized and/or cross trained in other production areas to assist when necessary in meeting company demand.
  • Will be cross trained to operate a forklift.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Maintains acceptable level of punctual and regular attendance for all scheduled work hours.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a non-exempt position, working during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) and some evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department or operational needs.



0-15% travel is expected for this position.


Minimum Qualifications

  • This is a physically demanding position.
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 75 pounds on a repetitive basis.
  • Is regularly required to operate a paint spray gun.
  • Will regularly be lifting parts, bending, stooping, and moving parts.
  • Will crouch or kneel when making paint color changes.
  • Required to stand during entire 10-hour work shift.
  • Constant use of hands and arms to perform job duties.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment when performing job duties, including respirator.
